Dwitiya Osha is Celebrated by married ladies of Odisha. Laddies observed this festival for welfares of family members. Mostly for the son.
This Brata is also known as Puajiuntia Osha. Pua means son and jiuntia means to be alive. There is a legend behind this brata where a mother observed this festival for a result her sons are lived after being killed by her enemy. So this festival is called pua-Jiuntia Osha.
There is a Legend behind this festival. In very old times there was a Kite (chila) and an Indian wolf decided to observed this festival as they noticed that human beings get benefits from this festival.
After the Ladies finished their worship the two animals collected their leftover puja-samagri and started their brata. The Kite followed this fast with great devotion, but the wolf could not find its hunger, so it ate meat.
In any case, both of them fulfilled this fast, as a result of this fast, both got human birth. Wolf takes birth as the elder sister and is married to a Minister and Kite takes birth to and younger sister and is married to a Businessman.
As the elder sister had not completed brata properly in the last birth, that is why she did not have any child, but the younger sister had completed her brata with great devotion, that is why she had many children. The elder sister was very jealous of her younger sister. It was when the younger sister's children used to come to her aunt's house, then the elder sister used to kill those children, but those children used to reach their home safely because of the influence of the God Dwitibahan.
That's why there is a proverb in odia language that
Must have your mother done Dwitiya Osha, that's why you are alive today.
The elder sister's husband gradually known about her wife's sin and forbidden her to do like this. Also, the younger sister knew about all this by her dream.
Once the younger sister requested the elder sister to observe Dwitiya Osha. So the elder sister took a vow by obeying the younger sister, by the grace of God Dwiti Bahan, she also got children, both the sisters happily started living with their family.
One day before the brata laddies observed this festival which is called Eka-bara. They prepare different types of cakes (pitha-pana) in the daytime and in the evening time they go to the village pond with puja samagri. They draw the picture of fox and Kite there.
Then they started worshiping Gangamata, Suryadev and Dwiti Bahan. They offered Dhupa Dipa and Naibaidya to God and also offered the pitha as prasad.
